Parksmart | Advancing sustainable parking structures
Parksmart is the only certification programme worldwide that defines guidelines for sustainable garages. Parksmart provides a roadmap for new and existing parking facilities for applying innovative and future-oriented strategies. The programme is managed by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI).
Points are awarded for practices in three categories: Management, (parking) programmes and building structures.
The assessment is based on different criteria, referred to as “elements”.
New buildings are awarded “Parksmart Bronze”, “Parksmart Silver” and “Parksmart Gold”, graded according to the degree of achievement of at least 110, 135 and 160 of 248 possible points. Existing parking areas can be awarded the title of “Parksmart Pioneer” if at least 90 points are achieved.
The process is monitored by auditors called Parksmart Advisors (formerly Green Garage Assessors). To obtain certification as a Parksmart Advisor, the candidates have to complete a training course and pass an examination. The training offers a deep insight into the specific management, programmatic, technological and structural elements of certification and is offered by the International Parking Institute (IPI) in partnership with the GBCI.
